The Department of Posts will open applications for over 25,000 Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) positions on September 2, 2026. The online application window will close on September 21, 2026, at 5 PM, according to a notification issued on August 20, 2026.

These vacancies are for Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM), and Dak Sevak posts under the GDS Online Engagement Schedule-II. The Department states that division-wise vacancy details are available on its GDS Online Engagement Portal.

Key Dates and Application Fee

The one-time registration process is already underway. Candidates must complete this registration before submitting their final application. A correction window will be available for two days after the September 21 deadline.

The application fee is Rs 100. However, the Department exempts female candidates, Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), and transgender women candidates from this payment. Fees can be paid online via credit card, debit card, net banking, or UPI and are non-refundable.

Eligibility and Selection Process

Applicants must be between 18 and 40 years old as of the application deadline, with age relaxation for reserved categories. The essential educational qualification is a pass in the Secondary School Examination (Class 10) from a recognized board, with passing marks in Mathematics and English.

Candidates must also have studied the local language prescribed for their postal Circle up to Class 10. Additional requirements include computer knowledge, knowledge of cycling, and having an adequate means of livelihood.

There is no written examination. Selection will be based on a system-generated merit list calculated from Class 10 marks. "The marks will be calculated to four decimal places for preparing the merit list," the notification states. For grades, a prescribed conversion method applies; a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is multiplied by 9.5 to derive marks.

Roles, Salary, and How to Apply

The duties vary by post. A BPM manages a Branch Post Office and must arrange its accommodation. An ABPM assists with postal operations and transactions. Dak Sevaks handle mail in various offices.

GDS employees are paid through a Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA), which includes a 3% annual increase. They are also eligible for Dearness Allowance and other benefits. The Department clarifies that GDS workers are not regular Central Government employees.

The application is a two-part online process on the GDS portal. It involves one-time registration with mobile and email verification, followed by filling educational details, selecting post preferences, and uploading documents. Only one registration per candidate is allowed.

After shortlisting, candidates must undergo physical verification of original documents, including marksheets, identity proof, and a medical certificate. They are advised to ensure all personal details match their Class 10 marksheet exactly to avoid cancellation.
