Nazarbayev University has surged 200 places in two years to rank 376-400 globally in the 2027 THE World University Rankings

Nazarbayev University has entered the 376-400 band in the 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. This marks a 200-place rise over two years and establishes the university as the highest-ranked institution in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. It is also the top-ranked university from CIS countries in the listing. The university was among the three biggest climbers within the global top 400 this year, alongside Constructor University in Germany and Université Laval in Canada. Over the past two years, it has moved from the global top 23% to the top 17.4% of ranked institutions.

Nazarbayev University recorded its largest-ever intake of international students this year. The institution is continuing to broaden the geographic diversity of its international student community and to make studying there accessible to students from different backgrounds. International students can benefit from a range of support, including scholarships and partial tuition grants, stipends and health insurance. Affordable on-campus accommodation starts from 145 US dollars per semester.

Kazakhstan's expanding presence in global rankings

Kazakhstan’s presence in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings expanded to 10 universities in the 2027 edition. This number doubled from the previous year. Beyond university rankings, Kazakhstan climbed eight places to 73rd in the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Global Innovation Index in September. The country recorded the biggest improvement in Central and Southern Asia on that index.

Other Kazakh universities also feature in the THE rankings. Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is ranked in the 1,401-1,600 group. The 2027 THE World University Rankings includes a record 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, which is 106 more institutions than the previous year.

Research quality and international engagement drive success

Research quality remains Nazarbayev University's strongest indicator in the THE evaluation. The university scored 84.1 in Research Quality, a metric benchmarked against global peers. This score is comparable to that of highly ranked institutions like the University of Geneva (163rd), the University of Arizona (139th), and the University of Rochester (136th). THE evaluates universities across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry engagement.

International accreditations and partnerships underpin this performance. Programmes in medicine, education, business, public policy, and engineering hold international accreditations. Seven STEM programmes have received ABET accreditation, which provides global recognition that they meet quality standards in engineering, computing, and applied sciences. The university has a joint academic programme with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. It also has a four-party agreement with A*STAR in Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, and the National University of Singapore to deepen cooperation in science, technology and innovation. Nazarbayev University is a founding member of the Asian Universities Alliance, alongside institutions like Tsinghua University, the National University of Singapore, the University of Tokyo, and King Saud University.

Supporting international student access and outcomes

More than 95% of Nazarbayev University’s graduates are employed. The university's rise in rankings and expansion of international partnerships are increasing its visibility as a study destination. This potentially shifts student interest toward Kazakhstan as an emerging education hub. The institution continues to broaden the geographic diversity of its international student community and improve accessibility through financial support and accommodation options.
