Dehradun schools close for weather alert
All schools and childcare centres in Dehradun district, India, are closed on September 1 due to an Orange alert for heavy rain and lightning.

All schools and childcare centres in Dehradun district, India, are closed on Tuesday, September 1. The one-day holiday was ordered by the District Magistrate and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, Dehradun, on August 31. This decision mirrors the kind of precautionary action seen when reviewing our fixtures for major sporting events that are postponed due to safety concerns.
The closure is a precautionary measure following an Orange alert for heavy weather. The forecast indicates the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, lightning, and spells of extremely heavy rain in parts of the district over the next 24 hours. The administration stated these conditions could lead to untoward incidents.
Educational institutions and Anganwadi centres have therefore been asked to remain closed as part of disaster mitigation measures. The Chief Education Officer and District Programme Officer, Dehradun, have been directed to ensure the order is followed.
Scope of the closure
The order applies comprehensively across the district. It affects all government, private, and non-government schools from Classes 1 to 12. Anganwadi centres, which provide early childhood care, are also included in the shutdown.
The holiday comes as parts of Uttarakhand state continue to receive heavy rainfall. The administration is keeping a close watch on water levels and conditions in areas that could be affected, similar to how a team monitors key stats during a critical match.
Monitoring river levels
Meanwhile, the water level of the Ganga river in Rishikesh has risen. This is due to continuous rainfall in the hilly areas of the Garhwal division, according to ANI inputs cited in the source report. The river was flowing at a strong pace at Triveni Ghat.
Officials of the Central Water Commission said the water level remained normal and below the warning mark. Authorities have nevertheless stepped up monitoring along the river as a precaution.
Safety measures enacted
Multiple agencies have been deployed to manage risks from the weather and rising water. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Water Police, and Disaster Relief Teams are now positioned at major ghats in Rishikesh, Muni Ki Reti, and Lakshman Jhula.
Loudspeaker announcements are being made at these riverbanks. They ask devotees, tourists, and local residents to exercise caution while bathing in the Ganga. For schools and Anganwadi centres, the closure on September 1 is currently a one-day measure.
