UK Updates Asylum Guidance for China Claims
The UK government has published updated policy notes for officials assessing asylum and human rights claims from Chinese nationals, covering topics

The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) department uses a series of updated country policy and information notes to make decisions on asylum and human rights applications from China. These documents provide officials with information on conditions in asylum seekers' countries of origin.
According to the UK government's guidance page, the notes cover a wide range of specific topics. The most recent updates include a note on modern slavery and another on Christians in China.
Recent Policy Note Updates
The source lists numerous updates to the guidance. A new country policy and information note on opposition to the state was published in January 2026. Another note focusing on Falun Gong was issued in November 2025.
In April 2025, the government published a note on Hong Kong national security legislation. Earlier, in December 2024, a note on non-Christian religious groups was added. The guidance on modern slavery has also been updated multiple times. A new note on Muslims (including Uyghurs in Xinjiang) was published in July 2021, and a new note on non-Christian religious groups was also published that same month.
Scope of the Guidance
The notes address many sensitive areas. They include information on Muslims, specifically mentioning Uyghurs in Xinjiang, with updates published on this topic. Guidance is also provided on issues like contravention of population and family planning laws, which covers single and unmarried mothers, with this information also being updated.
Some older documents have been removed. The source states that a background information note from March 2018 was removed as it is no longer valid and will not be replaced. Outdated guidance on Hong Kong protests from February 2020 and on 'fear of punishment on return to China for crimes committed in other countries (Double Jeopardy)' from March 2018 has also been taken down. An outdated guidance on non-Christian religious groups from August 2016 was also removed.
Document Maintenance and Review
The guidance is subject to regular review and revision. The information on Hong Kong's national security law was updated following a review by the Independent Advisory Group on Country Information and has been updated multiple times. Accessible versions of some documents, like the one about Christians, have been added.
Notes on specific themes are periodically reinstated or refreshed. The notes on 'opposition to the state' and 'background information including actors of protection and internal relocation' were reinstated after being temporarily removed, and the information on opposition to the state has been updated. A note on medical treatment and healthcare was also added at one point. The information on Falun Gong has been updated.
The UK government first published this collection of China guidance notes at an unspecified earlier date. The process involves continuous updates to reflect changing circumstances and information. The page also lists the publication of the Country information and guidance: Christians, China, March 2024 document.
