London Mayor launches city-wide welcome for international
A new initiative led by London Higher and backed by Mayor Sadiq Khan aims to provide a coordinated welcome for international students arriving in London

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has partnered with universities and city agencies to launch a coordinated welcome program for international students. The 'Your London Starts Here' initiative, spearheaded by the umbrella group London Higher, aims to show the capital's more than 200,000 annual international students they are "loved and wanted."
A Message from the Mayor
As part of the program, Mayor Sadiq Khan has recorded a personal welcome message for arriving students. "Every year hundreds of thousands of international students choose to come to London to study at our world-leading universities," said Khan. He stated their talent and diverse experiences provide a fantastic addition to the capital and that he is delighted to join the effort to show how welcome they are.
The Welcome in Action
Student ambassadors from universities across London will be present at Heathrow Airport during the busiest arrivals period in September to greet new international students. The campaign also involves practical guidance from major city institutions. Transport for London (TfL) is providing clear, practical travel advice to help students handle the transport network safely. The Metropolitan Police is contributing crime prevention and personal safety advice, with deputy assistant commissioner Louise Puddefoot encouraging students to seek trusted guidance and report any concerns.
Sector Ambitions and Context
Shitij Kapur, chair of London Higher and vice-chancellor of King's College London, said the initiative reflects an ambition for London to be known as much for its welcome as its education. "We want London to be the best in the world for higher education in every respect, and that starts with giving every arriving student the best welcome of any city on earth," he said. The campaign launches as the UK's international education sector contends with concerns over the country's reputation as a welcoming destination, amid immigration policy changes.
Laura Citron, chief executive of London & Partners, said international education is central to the Mayor's London Growth Plan. She described the campaign as an example of that ambition "in action," stating that attracting the brightest students is one of the city's greatest strengths. Universities UK International director Jamie Arrowsmith said the campaign demonstrates what can be achieved when universities, communities, businesses, and city leaders work together. The initiative shows London's ongoing effort to position itself as a leading global destination, use its universities, employment opportunities, and cultural diversity.
